PARIS, August 2024 – The USA’s Allyson Felix, the most decorated female athlete in Olympic track and field history with seven gold medals and 11 total medals, has today been elected to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission, alongside three-time Olympian Kim Bui from Germany, the most decorated canoe slalom paddler, male or female, in Olympic history, Jessica Fox, who has won double Olympic gold in Paris, and Tokyo 2020 tennis men’s doubles bronze medallist Marcus Daniell from New Zealand.
VOTES Between 18 July and 6 August, 6,576 athletes (61.96 per cent of the athletes participating at the Paris 2024 Games) cast their vote at Athlete365 House in the Olympic Villages in Paris, Châteauroux, Lille and Marseille, and at the Olympic Village in Tahiti and selected football cities. This is the highest participation rate at a Summer Games edition since London 2012.
Already serving as an athlete representative on the IOC AC as an appointed member since 2022, Felix, got the most votes (2,880) of the four athletes elected.
OLYMPIC NURSERY Felix, who retired following the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, introduced the idea of establishing a nursery at the Olympic Village. And for the first time, at Paris 2024, the IOC partnered with Pampers to create this safe space where athlete mothers can bond with and care for their children.
29 CANDIDATES The result of the election was announced at the Main Press Centre on Thursday, August 8 with most of the candidates in attendance. Twenty-nine athletes representing 15 sports, 29 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and all five continents stood for election.
The four new members will serve eight-year terms that will end at the Olympic Games Brisbane 2032 after joining the Commission upon the completion of Paris 2024.
OUTGOING MEMBERS They will replace Daniel Gyurta (Swimming, Hungary), Britta Heidemann (Fencing, Germany), Yelena Isinbaeva (Athletics, Russia) and Seung-min Ryu (Table Tennis, Republic of Korea), who were elected at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 and have reached the end of their terms.
The newly formed IOC AC will meet for the first time in Paris on 9 August, when they will hold elections for the Chair and Vice-Chair positions. The IOC AC Chair sits on the IOC Executive Board, representing athletes at the highest level within the IOC. It should be noted that there are 15 IOC AC members in the IOC Session representing athletes – this is the same number of representatives from NOCs and International Federations (IFs).
