The UJSF (Union of French Sports Journalists) was founded on January 18, 1958, during a constituent assembly held at a Parisian venue known before the Marthe Richard Law as "One-Two-Two," located at 122 rue de Provence
The title "Union of French Sports Journalists" was adopted due to the merger, at that time, of the Sports and Tourism Press Union, chaired by Marcel Reichel, with the National Union of Sports Journalists, which Félix Lévitan had established a year earlier.
The UJSF initially aimed to create a force to advocate with sports authorities (federations, clubs, organizers) for the respect of essential rights necessary for journalists to fulfill their mission (installation of telephone lines in stadiums, organization of press services and press boxes, issuance and verification of accreditations). At the same time, the UJSF, with the support of journalists' unions, successfully lobbied employers' organizations to have the qualification of "sports journalists" recognized.
This recognition, initially granted to the provincial press, was only achieved ten years later in the Parisian press through assimilation with news journalism. It was in 2008, during its 50th anniversary congress in Paris, that the USJSF (Union Syndicale des Journalistes Sportifs de France – Union of Sports Journalists of France) became the UJSF (Union des Journalistes de Sport en France – Union of Sports Journalists in France).
The Union of Sports Journalists in France is governed by the law of February 25, 1927.
The UJSF has 3100 members, all professional sports journalists, distributed across 18 regional sections.
